FCCLA State Leadership Conference Participants

April 12 – 14, 2012

Four FCCLA Teams made up of 17 students qualified for the FCCLA National Leadership Meeting in Orlando, Florida July 6 – 12, 2012 at the FCCLA State Leadership Conference held at the Denver Marriott Tech Center April 12-14, 2012. Six Holyoke teams competed in five different STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events. In addition to the top four teams, one other team won a Gold Medal and placed in the top four, while another team earned Silver medal status.

The theme of the Conference was Mission: Launch Innovation. The Keynote Speaker, Chris Bowers, was a highlight for the Conference attendees, he focused on strategies related to the importance of attitude, the influence of character, and the impact of values in a highly energized, humorous presentation. Members also attended workshops focusing on leadership development, networking, drug prevention, and depression awareness. Our own Molly Brandt, Jacob Vasa, and Ben Martinez put on a workshop on distracted driving as part of their chapter service project. The workshop, sponsored in part by AT&T, received media attention and was featured on both Fox31 and CBS News. (See Article Here)

Many of the Holyoke Chapter Members were recognized for completing a variety of FCCLA National Programs in the Opening Session. Those awards will be presented to students at the Chapter Awards Program on April 30, 2012.  Chapter Advisor Karen Pieper and Principal Susan Ortner served as the Event Chairpersons for the Parliamentary Procedure Event, and Gloria Bergner served as an Event Evaluator in the Applied Technology Event. Other parent sponsors included Bob and Brenda Heldenbrand as well as Dan Ortner. I was very proud of our students. They worked hard, performed very well and represented Holyoke in a manner that we can all be proud.
