Holyoke Students Correctly Answer
50,000 Questions to Earn 500,000 Grains of Rice
for Hungry People in Third World Counties

Using the “Free Rice” online computer program Holyoke Elementary students practiced academic skills such as vocabulary and math, and helped people living in third world countries at the same time.  Students from second to sixth grade logged in to the website http://freerice.com and correctly answered 50,000 questions.   For every correct answer, the online sponsors donated 10 grains of rice to the United Nation’s World Food Program.  The program automatically adjusts questions to the student’s ability level and cycles questions that are missed so that the child repeats the missed question.  Student watched their bowl fill with rice sent to help people in countries such as Syria, Sudan, Ethiopia and Mali. Students enjoyed helping others as they learned, and they celebrated reaching the goal on Monday February 11th with Rice Crispy treats.
