Sock Monsters
A 5th Grade Art Project

By: Christina Martinez, Elementary Art Teacher

How do you get students excited about sewing and recycling at the same time?  By making Sock monsters of course!  The 5th grade students at Holyoke Elementary stretched their creative muscles by inventing their own Sock Monster. These monsters are made out of 99.9% recycled materials; the only thing purchased was the thread. The students brought in socks from home to create their monsters, some even brought in old worn out pillows to stuff the monsters with. Students learned two different sewing stitches the running stitch and the blanket stitch. I loved this project just as much as the students did; we learned a lot and had a great time recycling.
